Alternative Reggae Rockers 311 & Slightly Stoopid brought their “Summer Unity Tour” to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine this past weekend.

After Soja opened the evening Slightly Stoopid took the stage as the sun was setting and the venue started to fill up. It was a perfect slot for them on a summer Friday night.

Hailing from San Diego’s Ocean Beach the California locals are touring behind their most recent release ‘Top of the World‘ which was released last week. Slightly Stoopid put on an amazing set including a special appearance by Angelo Moore of Fishbone to perform a song off the new record titled ‘Ska Diddy’

311 wasted no time kicking off their 90+ minute set with “Beautiful Disaster” and “Come Original”. Originally from Nebraska, 311 sure does make California feel like their first home. Front man Nick Hexum put on a flawless vocal and guitar performance as well as the rest of the band. Drummer Chad Sexton broke into one the best drum solo I’ve ever witnessed live. As the stage lights dimmed, focus was on Sexton, but the stage crew was busy bringing out risers. I thought they were for the next song, I was wrong. The rest of the band came out and joined Sexton. Huge standing bass drums, snares, and cymbals were center stage for the other four band members to play. I felt like i was watching a Manao Chinese drum performance. In perfect unison the band kept the beat and even tossed drum sticks at each other during the solo. It was a definite WOW!!! Encoring the set 311 pleased us with “Amber” and Hexum says “here’s one for all you old school day one 311 fans”  as the band kicked into “Down”.

What a great night of summer music in Southern California.
