Gwen Stefani @ Irvine Meadows – 10/30/2016

There was an elephant in the room this past weekend during the final show at Irvine Meadows, one that was many years in the making. Before closing forever to be replaced by apartments, the Amphitheatre hosted one final weekend featuring two nights with Gwen Stefani, who basically added two shows to the end of her “This Is What The Truth Feels Like” tour for this special event.

Sunday October 30 was not your average evening, it was apparent that many in attendance were there for the mere historical value and for one last trip down memory lane at the 35 year old venue. Rounding out the Orange County feel of the evening, Save Ferris and Young The Giant (originally from Irvine) served as support.

With 3 solo albums full of material, Stefani had no issues filling up a 25 song set list that clocked in at just under 2 hours of stage time. Opening with “Red Flag”, Gwen went straight to work with her high energy performance that later included numerous wardrobe changes. With support from numerous backup dancers and a full backing band Stefani spent a majority of the first three songs sprinting around the stage, barely staying in one place long enough to catch her breath. She mixed in four original No Doubt songs (“Underneath It All”, “Hella Good”, “Don’t Speak” and “Just A Girl”) and the Talk Talk classic “It’s My Life”, which her old band covered way back in 2003.

Eve (who opened for Stefani during the recently completed 28 tour date run, which just 2 weeks ago held two sold out shows at the Forum) made a surprise appearance and performed her 2001 hit “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” and stuck around for Stefani’s “Rich Girl”. Gwen later closed the main set with a heartfelt version of “Used To Love You” and a rousing edition of “Hollaback Girl”. Notably missing this final night was a ‘surprise’ appearance by Blake Shelton, who stopped in Saturday evening for one song with his much publicized girlfriend.

A three song encore included “Truth” and the No Doubt classic “Just A Girl” before leading to a brief homily by Stefani that the upcoming song would be the final song ever at Irvine Meadows. Throughout the evening Stefani made numerous references to the final show but just after 11:30pm “The Sweet Escape” would go down in history as the final tune to be played at this historic venue. Many individuals and Live Nation staffers would stick around long after this last song to soak in the final moments before the wrecking ball hits the venue.

This season at Irvine Meadows was circled on many calendars over 4 years ago when the Irvine Company announced that the lease would be terminated following the 2016 summer/fall shows. No one in attendance this evening was thinking about the upcoming dismantling of the venue and the upcoming development of phase two of Los Olivos apartment village by the Irvine Company.  Within the past two weeks plans have been submitted for Irvine city approval by developer FivePoint and Live Nation for a temporary venue to be located just minutes from Irvine Meadows at the Great Park, with an opening date as early as next summer (2017).

Stefani earlier in the evening stated that “tonight is the last night we will ever experience this beautiful, amazing place of music together”… well spoken words by an OC icon. The hillside venue has seen its share of shows including Michael Jackson, KROQ’s Weenie Roasts, The Grateful Dead & Oingo Boingo’s Halloween performances just to name a few—this evening with Anaheim’s own Gwen Stefani was a perfect send off for OC’s first Amphitheatre.
