Alice Cooper brought his “Detroit Stories” tour to the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville last night. As the lights went down the crowd erupted in unison while the intro music blared over the house PA system while the band members took their respective places on the haunted castle facade at the back of the stage.
While the band played the opening portions of “Feed my Frankenstein” the castle doors flung open and smoke billowed across the stage. The shock-rock pioneer slowly emerged from within the smoke as he walked his way to the center of the stage.
Cooper has always been known for having female guitar prodigies in his team, in the past that was Orianthi and this time it is none other than the guitar slinging “Hurricane” Nita Strauss. Strauss who was initially known for her work as one of the “Iron Maidens” has definitely come into her own, commanding the stage and almost over-shadowing Cooper himself. The 34 year old, Los Angeles native, definitely looked more like a wild 18 year old the way she ran around stage with endless amounts of energy.
The rhythm section was being driven by Glen Sobel on drums and Chuck Garric on bass. Sobel, another Los Angeles native, was keeping the well oiled machine chugging along last night. Garric, who also co-founded Beasto Blanco with Alice’s daughter Calico, was a blast to watch. In the past Chuck seamed a bit reserved to me, but last night he was definitely enjoying himself.
Opening the night was co-founding member and ex-guitarist for Kiss. Ace brought along a practically new band this time around. Behind the drums was the veteran Matt Starr, while out front was an almost entirely new crew consisting of guitarists Ryan Cook and Jeremy Asbock and bassist Philip Shouse. Frehleys set consisted of basically all the hits from his days with Kiss.
