Blues-rock guitar wizard Samantha Fish brought her “Faster” tour to Tennessee last night with a performance at the very intimate Walker Theatre in Chattanooga.
Fish’s new album “Faster” was released just over a month ago via Rounder records is a fast paced romp through the various genres she dabbles in from Rock to Blue Throw in some country vibes, and why not also feature rapper TechN9ne on a song. That type of diversity says a lot about an artist. It’s one thing to be able to play in multiple genres, but to splatter them throughout one album and not have any song sound out of place is a whole other talent. The album was produced by none other than Martin Kierszenbaum and features Josh Freese on drums. The addition of Freese on drums on this album fits perfectly especially when you look at the bands he has played in, with top billed names like the Vandals, Devo, Guns N Roses, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Sublime with rome and also the resident drummer for the super group “The Royal Machines” (Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Donovan Leitch, Mark McGrath).
Not a stanger to the stage Fish commands attention from the first note of the show. Her charismatic stage presence paired with her perfectly executed vocal performance is what makes it impossible to take your eyes off.
The crowd was definitely all in from the beginning, at first everyone remained seated – then slowly the music would take open and you would spot people standing up and dancing in the seats.
Opening the show was the 2021 “Best Emerging Artist Album” winner of the 42nd Blues Music Awards, King Solomon Hicks. Hicks proves my favorite saying of “Never skip the opener.” His performance was nothing short of stellar. Most guitarists kind of freak out when they break a string, Hicks snapped his E string with a crazy bend during his opening song. Unfazed, Hicks shifted and blasted through the rest of his 45 minute set, continuing the show missing a string – which to be honest, wasn’t even missed. Nothing seemed off, yet this guitar master was still shredding.
Be sure to catch the rest of this tour as it comes to a town near you. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
