Pigeons Playing Ping Pong (and supporting band Magic Beans) are immediately at home regardless of the venue space that they are playing in. Having seen Pigeons fill a huge space and now play to an intimate one at the Varsity Theater in , you can tell that their fans feed off of one of their strongest qualities – the band’s earnestness. When lead singer Greg Ormont asks the crowd “how we doing tonight”, a staple of just about any show, there’s something that makes it just a little bit different coming from this band.
You can feel that sincerity when they play – watching Ormont and co. get lost in themselves grooving to signature tracks such as Schwanthem, Indiglo and a memorable and excellent cover of Daft Punk’s ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’, it’s impossible to watch them having so much fun and not have a blast yourself. Their readily apparent delight in playing their material live and having a genuinely great experience while doing so is infectious – a communal vibe so powerful that the band decided to play through their usual set break.
Even better, as skilled as the band is playing live, they would be incomplete without their best-in-class light show – their light direction and programming elevates what is already a phenomenal auditory experience into a complete package of delight. I would challenge someone to watch this band play and walk away without an immensely positive experience. I don’t really think it’s possible, and I think if you asked anyone who was at the Varsity this past Sunday, they wouldn’t give you any less than an ‘incredible’.
