Slipknot, arguably one of the largest names in metal at the moment, brought their 2022 Knotfest Roadshow to Memphis last week. The tour features opening acts Wage War and In This Moment. Originally on the bill was Ukrainian heavyweights Jinjer, who sadly had to cancel as they are home fighting for their country.
As the lights dimmed and the opening notes of “Get Behind me Satan and Push” rang through the PA signaling the arrival of the almighty Slipknot, the crowd erupted in unison. As the song ends, a loud explosion goes off and the black kabuki emblazoned with the slipknot logo quickly pulls away revealing the massive stage set up. The band opened with “Disasterpiece” off their 2001 sophomore release Iowa, and that was all it took for the floor to become an instant massive most pit. Not letting up on the carnage the band rolls right into “Wait and Bleed” off their 1999 self-titled debut album.
Slipknot is a band that doesn’t spend time talking on between songs, they just power through with in your face metal. During a brief break in the assault, lead vocalist Corey Taylor asks the crowd “How many of you have seen Slipknot before” and much to my surprise not that many people responded, then he asks “How many of you crazy mother fuckers are seeing Slipknot for the first time?” And an even larger shock, nearly the entire arena were at their Slipknot baptism.
This tour is chalk full of all the old fan favorites, and not very many song off either of their last two albums. The band did play their newest song “The Chapeltown Rag” – in which Taylor commented is off their new album which he promised will be out by the end of the year.
The tour continues across North America until the middle of June. If you haven’t taken in a Slipknot show yet, I highly recommend you do. It is an experience you will be sure not to forget.
