Jerry Cantrell, one of the most prolific singer/songwriters/guitarists over the last 30 years brought his “Brighten” solo tour to The Belasco Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday night May 5 for an incredible 90 minutes of incredible music. Founding member of Alice in Chains, Cantrell released his third solo album Brighten in October 2021 and is currently touring in support of that. Known for his catchy and crunchy guitar riffs and soothing yet haunting vocals, Cantrell mixed in several solo songs with several Alice in Chains classics that had the crowd singing every word all night long.
The show started with “Atone” off Brighten then the band went right into the Alice in Chains banger “Them Bones”. Cantrell has former Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato sharing lead and backing vocals (Puciato also contributed vocals on the album) and he does an amazing job harmonizing with Cantrell – a perfect fit. Guitarist Tyler Bates rocks on the second guitar sharing the six string duties with Cantrell and the entire band sounded tight and rocked the entire show.
Cantrell swapped out guitars throughout the show which included his iconic “Blue Dress Rampage” guitar that he used exclusively in the early days. Cantrell recently hooked up with Gibson guitars and they just release two signature models the “Wino” and the “Les Paul Custom Prophecy”. Regardless of which guitar he was playing he certainly dazzled everyone with his effortless playing and tasty riffage.
The night finished with a 1-2-3 punch “Man in the Box” followed by “Rooster” and ending with a cover of Elton John’s “Goodbye”. A truly amazing night that took you through the maze of upbeat yet dark music from an icon – Jerry Cantrell.
The night started with up-and-coming star Phillip Michael Scales – a blues/rock guitarist that warmed up the crowd with some humor in between songs and a slew of mid-tempo songs that showcased his guitar playing and vocal skills.
