Perry’s Porno for Pyros Pacific Coast Party Performance

Throughout many generations of music there have been many great spokespersons who have advocated for peace while telling it like it is. One special kind of vocalist, who has certainly accomplished this is Perry Farrell. Since the eighties he has brought us different types of music that has told the tale of whatever kind of party Perry was into at the moment. From bands like Jane’s Addiction, to Satellite Party, to his solo albums, to the short-lived favorite Porno for Pyros, there has never been a dull moment for him. On Thursday July 7th at the beautiful Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, a special live reunion show of Porno for Pyros finally happened, with direct support by Perry Farrell himself singing along with his wife Etty Farrell as well as two openers, Starcrawler and Frankie & The Witch Fingers.

For those fans filled with the nostalgia from Porno for Pyros two studio albums that they put out in the nineties, there were only tears of joy on this occasion. There have only been a few select shows over the last twenty-two years or so where Perry Farrell played a full Porno For Pyros set with other original members. Now it seems there may be a new album, and a supporting future tour, but of course this is only speculation at this point in time.

Back to the beginning of the night in discussion, the tunes began with a fun set by Frankie & The Witch Fingers around eight o’ clock with an upbeat set of punk infused psychedelic rock. After their set and during every break there were a bunch of flashy dancers wandering the venue including stilts walkers and a spokesperson in flamboyant attire who was on stage as the night’s emcee. This was all in good favor so no one would forget that Perry Farrell was setting up for a grand party to take place.

Around nine o’ clock Los Angeles based grungy rock band Starcrawler took the stage with a spunk filled set that ended with vocalist Arrow De Wilde crowd surfing, and back bending into the audience who seemed to half understand what was happening. Then a very short blonde child ran up onto the stage to finish the last song on her air guitar for some added fun, after De Wilde ran off never to be seen on stage again. They also incorporated a fresh cover of “Pet Sematary” by The Ramones during mid-set as an added bonus. Starcrawler always has a good vibe and energy about them with their nineties mixed with seventies sludgy rock dedication, and this night was no different.

Next up was a short and sweet set that Perry Farrell and his wife Etty enjoyed together, along with some entertaining friends dubbed Perry Farrell and the Kind Heaven Orchestra. While these numbers had a much more modern and old school pop vibe, anyone who is a fan of Perry Farrell can appreciate what he was setting the tone for. This set included some interesting banter by Perry who stated “women are going to reclaim their bodies, let’s dance” among other fruitful topics. There was a very notable story about meeting his wife, and what song they used to “bang” to while they broke out into a Roy Orbison cover of “I Drove All Night To Get To You.” On a “school” night in Los Angeles having a set end around 10:45 usually meant the party was over, but not in the world of a sixty-three-year-old Perry Farrell who miraculously looks and acts about thirty-three. Watching him and his wife sing together in harmony on stage is always a pleasure.

Porno For Pyros started their one hour set around 11:20, and of course chose the song “Porno for Pyros” as the opener. They breezed through much of the first album like it was 1993, including tracks like “Sadness” and “Pets.” It was so wild hearing songs from Good God’s Urge as well, as they started that album off with “Porpoise Head,” and finally ended the perfect length set with “Tahitian Moon.” Despite the late hour, there was no one leaving early. It was all too much like being in an adolescent time warp to ever want to escape.

Original members, guitarist Peter DiStefano, bass player Martyn LeNoble, and drummer Stephen Perkins along with Farrell of course on vocals played like a well-oiled machine with lots of interaction and smiles onstage during their performance.

A special surprise guest artist also appeared midway through the set in the form of guitarist Gilby Clarke from Guns N’ Roses who positively provoked the crowd by playing on the tune “Bad Shit,” and also a Jane’s Addiction song “1%.” The already zen flower power, modern hippie vibe of the evening ended in people in the audience carrying large simple white flower bouquets, one of which was handed to Perry much earlier in the night. Long story longer, Perry Farrell is still the vocalist king of witty lyrics, serene vocals, plus plenty of non-word sound effects, and the world is ready for more Porno for Pyros.
